Each month at the Elgin in Maida Vale, the Idler magazine will bring together a great collection of writers, speakers and musicians for an evening of fun and feasting. Editor Tom Hodgkinson and Idler Academy director Victoria Hull will be your hosts. The ticket includes dinner and a glass of wine or craft ale.

This month, we are delighted to welcome the duo behind the legendary Viz comic, founder Chris Donald and publisher John Brown, and zoologist Lucy Cooke on the unexpected truth about animals.

Chris Donald and John Brown in conversation with Tom Hodgkinson
Nothing is off-limits as the mandarins of 1980s mirth take to the stage amidst a blizzard of bum jokes. There’s anecdotes aplenty as madcap Viz inventor Chris Donald, and genius toff John Brown – the alchamentalist who turned fart jokes into gold –  shuffle uneasily in their seats as they answer a few questions. Sorry, no refunds.

Lucy Cooke’s Menagerie of the Misunderstood

From feminist hyenas to perverted penguins, zoologist and award-winning broadcaster Lucy Cooke will reveal the unexpected truth about animals. This hilarious and fascinating talk is based on her latest book, The Unexpected Truth About Animals, published by Doubleday in November.
