Location

Come to the forest, sit by the fireside and listen to intoxicating song, as some of the finest musicians in the land duet with the rare and sweet song of the nightingale.

You are invited not just to listen to these birds in ear-tinglingly close proximity, but to share an evening around the fire, delving into your hosts’ and guest musicians’ own fund of rare songs and stories. Each night features your guide, an ornithological expert and fund of knowledge on the land and the ways of the woods, plus a very special guest musician. After a filling supper and fine drinking round the fire, the group of around 20 people each will walk in silence and darkness into the nightingale’s habitat, not only to listen to these majestic birds, but to share in an improvised collaboration; to experience what happens when bird and human virtuosi converge in musical collaboration.

Events run from 12th April to 13th May at four sites across Southern England. You can read more about the sites, and browse through the available dates, below. Book through the Idler Academy to get an exclusive discount on this magical evening.

To book, please select your desired location from the drop down menu on the right, and add to basket. The Nest Collective will then be in touch to finalise the date and other details of your booking.

GRAFHAM WATER, CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Set in 2,400 acres of Cambridgeshire countryside, Grafham Water is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Grafham reservoir was created in the 1960s and the nature reserve here is the ‘youngest’ site for our ornithological duets. It is home to a thriving wildlife population. The site encompasses woodland, grassland, wetland, and marginal habitats, making it the perfect arena to commune with all manner of creatures – not least the nightingale. A unique site as a hot bed for nightingale populations and a base for research into their movements, we are hugely privileged to be allowed onto the area to host these events.

FINGRINGHOE WICK, ESSEX

Fingringhoe Wick was Essex Wildlife Trust’s first nature reserve and where the Trust opened their first visitor centre some years later. Nearly sixty years on, visitors are still coming to see this magical place.

Set in a spectacular position overlooking the Colne Estuary, the nature reserve has stunning scenery. Even on the dullest days, it offers the visitor real peace and quiet and a chance to escape from it all. It offers a wide range of habitats including areas of grassland, gorse heathland, reed beds, ponds, intertidal area and the estuary itself.

The reserve is famous for its Nightingales each spring. The songsters ring out over the reserve with about 35 males usually to be heard during the day.

GREEN FARM, KENT

Green Farm is set in the beautiful Kent countryside, amongst ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. It is home to an abundance of fauna and wildlife, including some rare species.

Owners Maryann and Martin Richmond-Coggan are passionate about conservation and work hard to encourage and retain the natural habitats of local species. As a result of their (and their neighbours’) careful farming, they have nightingales visit the farm each year, taking residence in their lovely woodland, near the campfire meadow. It’s a perfect place to experience Singing With Nightingales; a truly charming, quintessentially English location.

SECRET LOCATION (NEAR LEWES), SUSSEX

The home of our Singing With Nightingales season in 2016, this beautiful location in the East Sussex countryside has a thriving population of Nightingales who make this their springtime home. The farm and its associated meadows and coppiced woodlands are a pristine wildlife environment.

The family who have granted us usage of their land proudly state that all but 3 of Sussex’s native butterfly species can be found on their land. 40 years of sensitive farming and woodland management have made this a simply idyllic spot, as guests on the 2015 & 2016 walks will remember.
