Thanks to NJ Stevenson, author of The Chronology of Fashion: From Empire Dress to Ethical Design (A&C Black), who delighted a packed house at the Idler Academy last night with fascinating tales about the trouser, the bloomer and the popularity of the enormous hat among Parisian women during the Nazi occupation.

NJ reckoned that fashion now is about style and individuality, and predicted the rise of a new trend: slow fashion, a movement we at the Idler Academy would heartily endorse. Slow fashion would, we think, combine the home-made and the local with the tastefully exotic. TH
