   I think Tom Hodgkinson’s view are great and can’t wait to buy his book in March. Being a skint stay at home mum, already more or less living the life Tom advocates, his views really lift me when feeling a bit down. My little girl has been described by her teacher as being extremely happy, a role model for the class and very kind and conscious of other peoples feelings, despite suffering from selective mutism since starting pre-school, likened to stagefright. She comes home from school filthy from playing roughly at playtime.

   Speaking as a mother of a daughter (now a young adult)whom I raised myself, I totally agree with Tom Hodgkinson’s view on parenting: let your kids play to their hearts content and watch their innate intelligence blossom!

   The trouble with our so-called civilised West – which is based on the spurious doctrine of christianity (the Big Lie!) is that we systematically destroy our childrens’ emotional life, in order that they will become slaves to the sociopaths whose sole (no soul) desire is to keep MediEVAL values alive and kicking! In other words, dehumanised sub-humans who are afraid of life. Children NATURALLY love life, so let the PLAY AWAY!!!

   BRILLIANT! I love it. At last a book that truly shows the way forward on the tricky path of parenthood.
   Bravo! A “must have” for any parent.

   I really love Tom Hodgkinson’s books, and am waiting for the Idle Parent to make its way halfway across the world to me…I’m a cartoonist, an attachment mom and unschooling parent of 4 kids (some would think that this makes me too hands-on, but in reality though I spend all my time with my kids, it’s all being hands-off and totally idle.)
   I have a couple of comics that some of you on this site my like:

    I just can’t wait to read this! Being a rather skint mum I ordered this book from my local library about 2 months ago, I was about 13th in line, and I should be getting it very soon. I would have loved to have read it over the summer holidays while my children were playing to keep myself confident that I’m doing the right thing. I hear so many other parents spending their summer hols at theme parks and plastic play areas and moaning and groaning for the holidays to end. Even if I had the money to go I don’t think I would choose, it just brightens me up when I see them collecting sticks and and making pretend campfires in the garden or helping to prepare a menu for dinner, or giving them a net to take down to the river. But sometimes it can be a bit downlifting when all the other parents have so much planned, every day, activity here and activity there. Until I came across The Idler and then The Idle Parent I have to admit I felt quite alone. But this has given me confidence that I’m not alone and maybe I am doing something right and this is a real, real, help, thank you!

    When I found out this book was about to be published I quickly put my order in and figured someday I would be a parent and it would probably be helpful. And if not, I knew full well from TH’s previous writings that it would be amusing in the very least. I was so happy to receive my order the day after my wife and I found out that we were having our first little rascal. I happily perused The Idle Parent during the pregnancy. Now that our daughter has arrived, I have been cherishing all of our moments together and know that in the years to come, our eventual hands off approach to parenting will help her to blossom in to a really cool kid. At one month she is already showing signs of such things. I guess a little personality can go a long way…

    What a great book! However, after following your advice and leaving my 5 year daughter and 2 year old son to off-and-play my wife and i lazed about drinking wine and talking about adult things. After 40 mins. I decided to check up on them. I found my daughter slowly strangling her younger brother “he wasn’t playing the game properly”. Perhaps we should employ a nanny?

    Idle parents get what they deserve: resentful unhealthy kids and tummy bugs.

    This is a misunderstanding of the principles of idle parenting. There is a big difference between neglect and the idle parenting Tom advocates. He has always made this clear.
