The Amphion Consort on period instruments will present a programme of light works by Beethoven and his contemporary, the Italian guitar virtuoso Mauro Giuliani who was active in Vienna in 1806-1819.
The concert will feature the classical flute as played up to the 1820s, a wooden instruments with 12 keys, and a copy of a Panormo guitar strung in gut and silver strings.

The Serenade for string trio op.8 by Beethoven was arranged by Wenzel Thomas Matiegka (1770 – 1830), a Bohemian composer who was active in Vienna, into a trio with a guitar part replacing the cello in the original scoring. it is interesting to note that in 1803 Beethoven himself arranged his trio as the Notturno for Viola and Piano in D major, Op. 42, while Matiegka’s own Notturno for flute, viola and guitar was arranged by Schubert into a quartet by adding a cello part to the scoring. This reflects the demands of a busy music publishing market in Vienna at that time which was aimed at the amateur as well as the professional player.

The concert will conclude with Beethoven’s Serenade op.25 written for the airy combination of flute, violin and viola, a charming work in 6 movements.

This programme presents music that is graceful, at times sentimental or witty, expressly written to please the listener’s ears and drawing on a delicate combination of instruments.
