TOO often, anarchy is understood simply as a synonym for chaos and violence. But in fact, it has been called ‘the beautiful idea’, and occupies a distinguished place in the history of recent political thought. It involves voluntary action, autonomy, creativity, strict ethics and the highest degree of personal responsibility. Tonight Penny Rimbaud, Ian Bone and Peter Good will discuss the true meaning of anarchy and take questions from the audience. Your David Dimbleby figure for the night will be Idler editor Tom Hodgkinson.
Penny Rimbaud has worked on a huge number of influential artistic and philosophical projects over the last forty years or so. These include the Dial House community in Essex, the Stonehenge Free Festival, Crass and Last Amendment. He is the author of Shibboleth and The Diamond Signature, both published by AK Press, Lately he has published a series of books and pamphlets with Bracketpress, and has recorded with The Charlatans and Japanther. His latest book is This Crippled Flesh, a copy of which was recently bought by historian Simon Schama from the Idler Academy.
Ian Bone is best known for his newspaper Class War, which has consistently attacked authority in all its forms, whether socialist, capitalist or corporate. He also published Bristol newspaper The Bristolian, which was runner up for the Paul Foot Award for Investigative Journalism in 2005. He started the ‘Vote Nobody’ campaign, and is the author of Bash the Rich: True Life Confesssions of an Anarchist in the UK, which is now being made into a film. He recently published Hartmann the Anarchist, a 19th century sci-fi tale written by Edward Douglas Fawcett.
